Privacy Notice
Last updated:
Introduction
Daily Zine (“DailyZine”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the DailyZine website and mobile applications (together, the “Service”). This Privacy Notice explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
The Service helps you discover content published by third-party sites. It is described further in our About page. Use of the Service is also governed by our Terms of Service.
We act as the data controller for personal information processed through the Service, including information processed when you create an account or sign in through our authentication system.
Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use the Service. We collect only what we need to operate, secure, and improve the Service.
Account and identity
If you create an account or sign in, we collect and process information needed to identify you and keep you signed in. This typically includes a user identifier, email address, display name, and sign-in credentials, through our authentication system (see Authentication).
Your activity on DailyZine
When you are signed in, we store information about how you use features, for example:
- Publishers and subjects you follow
- Posts you like, save for later, or bookmark (including lists you create)
- Reading history and categories you browse in your library
- Posts or publishers you hide or mute
- Language and content preferences that affect what we show you
This data is linked to your account so the Service can sync your library and personalise feeds such as “For you”.
Feed and session identifiers
For personalised feeds, we may assign a session identifier (for example a random UUID) so we can paginate and rank results consistently during a browsing session. This identifier is not intended to identify you outside the feed system but may be stored with your account activity when you are signed in.
Technical and usage information
When you use the Service, our systems automatically collect technical information such as IP address, browser or app type, device characteristics, general location derived from IP, pages or screens viewed, referring URLs, and timestamps. We use this for security, debugging, capacity planning, and understanding how the Service is used in aggregate.
Communications
If you contact us (for example via our contact page, support email, or a publisher removal request), we collect the information you send, such as your name, email address, and message content, so we can respond.
Information we do not collect from publisher sites
When you open an article on a publisher's website, that site may collect its own information about you under its privacy policy. DailyZine does not receive your activity on those third-party sites unless you return to the Service.
How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide the Service, including browsing, discovery, following, and library features
- Authenticate you and maintain your session
- Personalise content rankings and recommendations where you use signed-in features
- Remember settings such as language
- Operate, maintain, and improve performance and reliability
- Detect, prevent, and address abuse, fraud, and security incidents
- Comply with law and enforce our terms
- Respond to your requests, including publisher removal and rights enquiries
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we rely on one or more of the following legal bases:
- Contract — processing needed to provide the Service you request (for example maintaining your account and library)
- Legitimate interests — operating and improving the Service, keeping it secure, and understanding aggregated usage, balanced against your rights
- Consent — where we ask for your consent for a specific purpose (you may withdraw consent at any time for that purpose)
- Legal obligation — where we must process data to comply with law
Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar technologies (such as local storage in apps) where needed to run the Service.
- Strictly necessary — for example session cookies that keep you signed in and protect your account
- Preferences — for example remembering your language choice
We do not describe optional advertising or third-party analytics cookies here because we do not use them for those purposes on the website at the time of this notice. If we introduce non-essential cookies or similar tools, we will update this notice and, where required, ask for your consent before using them.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent you from signing in or using parts of the Service.
Authentication
Sign-in and account management use Keycloak authentication software that is owned, hosted, and controlled by DailyZine as part of the Service. It is not a separate third-party login service. When you register or sign in, your credentials and account details are processed by us through that system to create and maintain your DailyZine account and to issue session tokens used by the website and apps.
Account-related emails (such as verification or password reset) are sent through infrastructure we operate. Essential account emails cannot always be unsubscribed from if they are required for security.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in these circumstances:
- Service providers — companies that host infrastructure, send email, or otherwise help us operate the Service, under contracts that require them to protect your information and use it only for our instructions (this does not include our own Keycloak authentication deployment, which we operate directly)
- Legal and safety — when we believe disclosure is required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, and security
- Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this notice or notice to you
Aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you may be used for analytics and product improvement.
International transfers
We and our service providers may process information in the United Kingdom and other countries. Where personal information is transferred outside the UK or European Economic Area, we use appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses or equivalent mechanisms) as required by applicable law.
Retention
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this notice, including to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.
Account and library data are generally retained while your account is active. If you delete your account or ask us to delete information, we will delete or anonymise it within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records for legal, security, or backup reasons.
Server logs and security records may be kept for a shorter or longer period depending on operational needs and legal requirements.
Security
We use technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and monitoring. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
You are responsible for keeping your sign-in method secure and for activity under your account. Tell us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to certain processing of your personal information, and to data portability. You may also have the right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (for example the UK Information Commissioner's Office).
You can update some information in account settings where available. You may clear parts of your activity (such as history) in the library where the product provides that control. To exercise other rights or delete your account, contact us using the details below.
Publishers seeking removal or correction of indexed listings should follow our publisher removal process. We verify control of the relevant site or rights before acting on certain requests.
Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate steps.
Third-party websites
The Service contains links to publisher and other third-party websites. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one. See External links & third-party content for how we link to external material.
Changes to this notice
We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. We will post the revised notice on this page and update the “Last updated” date. If changes are material, we may provide additional notice (for example in the Service or by email).
